You have to be joking? Adam Rowe

The joke that you loved but no one else did?

I did a bit about three times about people who take cheap brands of alcohol to house parties, then drink someone else’s expensive stuff under the guise of “waiting for theirs to go cold” – I thought it was a common thing, turns out I’ve just got tight mates.

The joke that worked but you are not so proud that it had?

Oh, there’s loads of these from when I started. So many that it’s very embarrassing. I try and excuse it with the fact that I was 18 and not educated on things like sexism, gender politics and identity the way I am now. Probably the worst one was:

A lot of my friends have girlfriends, the only bird I’ve got just sits in it’s cage all day making fucking noises… she doesn’t call it a cage, she calls it a ‘kitchen’, but whatever.”

Oh god, I’ve just been sick in my mouth. Horrendous. Why am I telling you that I used to tell that joke? I appreciate that these questions are different to the billion other Q&As I’ve had to fill in, but that’s a nasty one. I should have just lied. But this joke did work, literally every time I did it.

The comedian(s) that made you want to be a comedian?

Jason Manford & Kevin Bridges. They are the only two comics that I’ve ever felt truly represented by on TV and they were both just great from a very young age. I think early on it was quite apparent that I’d been influenced by those guys, but as I’ve developed as a comic I think that’s gradually gone away. I’m a huge fan of American comedy now and I feel that influencing my work more and more, all the time.

The last thing that made you cry with laughter?

It’s very rare that a comedian will make me cry with laughter. It’s only usually something stupid that my best mate says that can get me to that level of laughter, because we have the exact same humour and nobody else does. This’ll sound ridiculously unfunny to everyone reading this, but we were in a Chinese restaurant a while back and for some reason I wanted to mention Engelbert Humperdink, but instead I said Rigobert Humperdink by mistake and we laughed to the point of being asked to leave the restaurant and for the entire cab ride home.
