You have to be joking? Ari Shaffir

The joke that you loved but no one else did?

I swear to god I can’t think of any right now. I’ve thought about it for two days. I know there are some that fit here but I can’t think of any. I even know I’ve told the crowd before that they’re not wrong. I said, “when a joke is 1 for 75 it’s not the audience’s fault. What’s the control in the experiment? It’s the comic. And he’s doing a bad job.”

The joke that worked but you are not so proud that it had?

I can’t think of anything for this either. This one I’m not sure I have anything for. The other one I know I do but I can’t remember. This one might have no answer. Are other people able to answer this one? Have you followed up by asking them why they’re doing that joke if they’re embarrassed about it? It seems like a real sell out move, doesn’t it? Unless the question really is asking about being “not SO proud” in which case I have plenty of throwaway jokes that are bridge gappers that don’t embarrass me but also don’t literally make me prideful. If that’s really the question then I have too many short ones like that in the middle of bits to list here.

The comedian(s) that made you want to be a comedian?

Sam Kinison. Plus, all the comics I saw on late night tv. On the Tonight Show. On showcase shows on Saturday nights. Pretty much anyone I ever saw  and that includes the 5 comics that I saw perform live when I was in college. No name comics on 3 person local shows in Baltimore. (It was 5 not 6 because one guy was on both shows my girlfriend and I went to .

The last thing that made you cry with laughter?

For Big Jay Oakerson’s birthday last year I gave him a wrapped box. It was an airtight, waterproof tackle box, I think for fishing. Inside I put a sock in there. And then I took a dump on that sock. I had it on the table for almost 2 hours before he opened it. Lots of other comics were around. When he finally opened my gift, the shit smell that wafted out of that filled the room and sent people running for the exits. Literally. It was mayhem. I hadn’t laughed that hard in years and years.
