The joke that you loved but no one else did?
I won’t spoil it here, but there is a one liner about monkeys in GHOST MACHINE which consistently gets about a 40% response but it is my favourite line in the entire show. I’ve tried to cut it so many times in the last three years in the interests of democratic approval but now just keep it in for the 40% of people who like it as much as I do.
The joke that worked but you are not so proud that it had?
I don’t think I’m ashamed of any of my work, no. Why would I make work I wasn’t proud of as though the situation is somehow out of my hands?
Dear potential audience members,
I want to state clearly to any and all of you that I am in complete control of my artistic choices. If you are considering coming to see my multi award winning, critically acclaimed show GHOST MACHINE please rest assured that all my audience, both collectively and as individuals need to do is sit back and enjoy the show.
You do not need to worry that I, the creator might walk away with any shame, confusion, or bewildered hurt because of your reaction to my work. You are beholden to no responsibility in regards to my personal emotions. You are free to select at leisure your natural and organic responses to the show because I will stand no less proud, go to bed no more ashamed, mortified, discomposed, or abashed than if you had stayed at home eating an Aero bar in front of the telly and our paths had never crossed.
Come for the experience of it, if you wish. Rest assured that I am perfectly aware that human perspective is physchologicaly diverse and multifaceted, all interpretations of art are valid and non diminishing of an artists original creative intentions and pride of work. I beg, and implore you. Please. Please do not let the wording of this flippant q&a make you feel that you will be judged or condemned in your responses to my jokes, or that I in turn, will measure myself by the subjective yardstick of your approval. I will provide the jokes, and there will be no judgement upon you for that which you choose to savour or detest.
Sincerely, Laura Davis.
The comedian(s) that made you want to be a comedian?
Josie Long, Daniel Kitson, Maria Bamford, Hannibal Buress.
The last thing that made you cry with laughter?
A youtube video where a Beluga Whale dances to a Mariachi band but I was very jet lagged at the time.
