The joke that you loved but no one else did?
It’s actually a joke I used to close with, about a trending topic I started on twitter #joannfabricsslogans, which came from a stoned convo I had with a few of my comedian pals in a car as we passed one of the crafting stores. When I first started trying it on stage, it was bombing. Hard. None of it was funny. Except to me. Kept making adjustments as comics I worked with gave me different insights & tags. Now it’s a really long, dumb bit I figured out how to make work in spite of itself. A comic I hosted for who later featured for one of my headline nights said he remembered me because of that bit and “he almost told me to drop it completely because it was so bad”. Sometimes you just gotta stick to your gut and what you find funny.
The joke that worked but you are not so proud that it had?
Almost all my early jokes were the easy, predictable race jokes: I’m Half Puerto Rican and half Mexican you know what that means…type of stuff. Audiences have no refined palette so they’ll consume anything. It’s on the artist to elevate past those easy things into stuff you can be proud of.
The comedian(s) that made you want to be a comedian?
My pillars of comedy are Richard Pryor for his transparency, Brian Regan for his charisma & relatability, Chappelle for his ability to infuse empathy into his words, Hannibal Buress for his work ethic & professional pettiness, Megan Gailey for her tenacity & teaching me to diva, and Paula Poundstone’s shoulders.
But looking at my childhood, most things I watched and enjoyed were comedian created (Bobby’s world, life with Louie, Animaniacs, all that, Robin Williams movies) so it seems to have had an impact on me from a young age.
The last thing that made you cry with laughter?
it was in LA after I’d been on the road for a while, myself and a few friends (Dulce Sloan, Sam Jay, Chris Redd, Luke Schwartz) caught up with each other at the Improv and proceeded to roast each other and anyone who came in our field of vision for several hours. It was glorious. Even when I was on the receiving end.
