The Delightful Sausage (aka Amy Gledhill and Chris Cantrill) greet you as you walk into the room, offering cheese puffs on cocktail sticks (posh) and handing you an agenda for this week’s meeting. As the chairpeople of the Precinct of Wider Ickleton Community Saviours – PWICS – Amy and Chris’ mission is a bid for Wider Ickleton to become the next city of culture. Our hosts stick to this concept throughout the show, providing an amazingly silly play that goes to the daftest of places. Occult characters straight of of Pan’s Labyrinth are introduced, animated clips let us know more about the downtrodden inhabitants of Wider Ickleton, and Amy wears a hot dog outfit through the whole show, for reasons that aren’t properly explained.
As a double act Gledhill and Cantrill work brilliantly together. They mockingly mention The Mighty Boosh as inspirations, but the style is more Vic and Bob, with a splash of Tim and Eric during the video inserts. The script is packed with gags but the pair have lots of room to ad-lib and react to the audience, often resulting in the show’s most endearing moments. It’s a great mix of slightly old-fashioned silliness with modern comedy sensibilities, referencing #metoo and toxic masculinity. It all makes for a really fun and friendly hour. With tongues-in-cheeks, they mention the middle act of the show is a bit ‘inaccessible’, but in truth this is a show with a lot of appeal for all kinds of comedy enthusiasts.
