Jimmy Carr and Al Murray are one of the comedians featured in a new documentary about the economics of Edinburgh Fringe, with its creators warning about the future of the arts festival in the wake of the Coronavirus. Father of the Fringe, written by stand-up writer and financial writer Dominic Frisby and presented in 1837 by Shazia Mirza, Henne Wehn and Arthur Smith, explores the connection between the festival and the principles of Free-Market Theory, which was established in the 18th century by philosopher Adam Smith.
Tickets for the 2021 festival, which is due to run from August 6 to 30, will go on sale at the Edinburgh Fringe box office on July 1, but there is still great uncertainty about when it will take place. ‘I’m doing four shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year, but not all of them are on that day. On the first day, I’m at the Banshee Labyrinth (156) at 5.10pm, which is the coolest venue in Edinburgh and probably the most haunted.

Dominic Frisby is a prolific dubbing artist who has been voicing film trailers and commercials since he graduated from university. He has worked for The Guardian, The Independent and numerous financial websites. He is the son of the playwright and novelist Terence Friso and Christine Doppelt.
He began his career as an upper-class rapper who sometimes amused himself with love songs and lyrics. Frisby began composing in 2003, including Kings Head, Crouching End and what he calls his “favourite places.”. He piloted a show on Radio 4 No More Money in the Sense, and uploaded his first song, “Debt Bomb”, in May 2017 to YouTube,  a satirical comedy about the economics of certain governments.
When the Edinburgh intellectuals gathered at Panmure House, Adam Smith’s last house, I was curious to examine the hypothesis that the father of modern economics was the reason the margins existed. By participating in this research, Smith, or at least the economic principles he championed, became the “father of the fringe.”.
